Thank you Glennon for these words!I can’t read this out loud without tears! The “Ache” is a part of all of us. It’s the vulnerability of human life. We can numb, escape into worry and anxiety or overwork- or we can go into the deeper work of sitting with our grief, the fear of loss and the deep vulnerability we live with that we are always at risk of losing the ones we love.

Here is an easier-to-read version! I have been studying neurodivergent stress- in my own life, in my son’s responses, in what I hear and experience clinically and I’ve created a questionnaire that I use in sessions to help me pinpoint and understand the unique pressure points for each child.

Stress for children builds up.

Sometimes what we see in terms of children’s behaviour is what we see when nervous system stress has built up for children and we see it tipping over meltdown, aggressive or shut down behaviour.

We can see that stress has built up in children when we see:
“Fight responses”
“Flight responses” (withdrawing, hiding, running)
“Fawn” People pleasing, over-compliance, pushing down needs or
“Freeze” responses (being overly rigid and controlling, refusing to comply with simple requests, difficulties transitioning, melting down, shutting down).

But we often get stuck focusing on the responses to stress and not the reasons underneath. So I have made a list of the reasons for stress I have observed.

Life is hard for everyone when our neurodivergent kids are overwhelmed, stressed or reaching for their fight flight responses at school. Creativity and flexibility and thinking outside of the box are critical to the process of inclusion for our struggling kids. Our family was in the same boat. After our first year of school, 14 behaviour incidents and a suspension (in prep) we were needed a lot of support and understanding to support our boy with his brain and body differences. There’s so much more to all this. But let’s keep the conversation going. What has been key for you to support your child at school?

It’s takes a lot of hard work to build an unders

It’s takes a lot of hard work to build an understanding of the brain differences and needs of our ADHD, Autistic and AuDHD kids. And it takes our commitment as a family every day. I think back on my childhood and wish my family had had the understanding of me that our family now has of our son! Once we have those understanding pieces we can really begin to create a safer environment.

I read the parliamentary review on School Can't, and here were some of my take aways and reflections. I've been on this journey with some families over the years, and they and their children truly need more support and understanding.

I'm also sparing a thought for overburdened teachers, who need support to action and implement accomodations, and are already burdened with pressures of providing accomodations.

Hello! Its been a little while and I thought I would say hello! My name is Louisa, and I am a psychologist in Brisbane.

I started a small practice in Mount Gravatt, Brisbane, in January of this year.

I am an ADHDer, and I parent a 6 year old and a 2 year old. My 6 year old also has ADHD, and my husband affectionately calls our home the ADHD kingdom.

Therapy is definitely my special interest and passion, I also love to hyperfocus on areas of child development and perinatal mental health (which fascinatingly, are deeply intertwined in the research literature).

When mothers are well, and cope well, we create an environment thats hopeful, nurturing and kind for our children.

And if our children have differences and difficulties, then feeling mentally well- can help us offset some of the natural stress that happens when we are parenting.

That said, mental health journey- can be a little backwards, upside down and inside out....I don't believe we become mentally well by working hard on our positive thoughts, energy levels and optimism (although all that might help),

Sometimes we have to drill down deep- we have to spend time getting know ourselves and making friends with our deep fears and concerns. We have to delve into the realm of self compassion- and learn to speak to ourselves with tenderness and kindness....

This is especially true when we are parenting. I don't know about you but find it hard, ALL the time. Last night I was so upset when one of my children had put the other one in danger. I was scared and upset, and I was angry. Once everyone calmed, I forgave myself so quickly- quicker than I ever have before. I felt less guilt, shame, and frustration and I was able to let it go. I'm doing my best, and I trust you are to, and I can trust that my relationship with my child is not permanently damaged. That is self compassion at work (after years of working on my negative self talk and talking back to the voice of shame, criticism and blame).
